It had respect, to be sure, garnered through cult classic series like Armored Core and King’s Field, but these were far from the unstoppable cultural forces of something like Dark Souls. FromSoftware even suffered a handful of botched projects and flops like Ninja Blade—something that seems inconceivable in 2025, considering the company’s winning streak. But Demon’s Souls drastically transformed FromSoftware’s reputation and design philosophy, introducing the world to Hidetaka Miyazaki as a game director. It’s small by Elden Ring standards, but worth experiencing firsthand nevertheless. Demon’s Souls is a full proper remake of the first Souls game.
This is because the most useful weapons and items in the game are the base ones you find and then upgrade. Being able to stockpile these resources means you can upgrade weapons more effectively and thus improving the pacing of the game overall. The major change, which may seem trivial but really isn’t, is the ability to send items back to storage. In the original game, when you were maxed out in terms of the items you could carry, you had to drop something in order to pick up something else.
The remake was released alongside the console, to showcase the PlayStation 5’s capabilities. The fans of the original version had nothing but positive things to say about the remake. Demon’s Souls was originally released for the PlayStation 3 and remade from the ground up for the PlayStation 5. Fans of the original can expect a faithful reimagining of the fallen kingdom of Boletaria and go back to slay enemies on current-generation hardware.
If I was at From Software, I would be very worried about now. Simply because churning out the same Souls game every year is no longer an option when other studios can do it so much better. The trophies are also more interesting and less of a slog compared to the original game (shown above), and while I don’t normally bother with trophies, I actually had fun acquiring them all for this remake. There are some other nice tweaks as well, with the target camera being more helpful now, but overall, this feels like a properly streamlined and improved game while still being very faithful to the original. This single change makes the whole game a lot more straightforward and less awkward.
Demon’s Souls Development Concepts
The community FromSoftware has developed around their post-Demon’s Souls project can sometimes be seen as rude and egotistical, and the idea of cheesing bosses becomes a divisive conversation. A huge point of contention with Demon’s Souls is that the healing grass system in the game makes healing overpowered. The issue focused on carrying a ton of the item with no drawbacks.

Players could take advantage of the game’s unpolished state to cheaply attack certain bosses through the game’s fog doors — barriers that wall off rooms where boss fights happen. Players won’t be able to exploit those bugs in the remake, Moore says, but other, far less consequential, meme-worthy bugs and game design quirks will be properly retained. The listing has a November 19 release date affixed to it, which makes sense considering that’s the international launch date for the PS5 and most of its launch titles. With all that in mind, it’s wonderful that Bluepoint Games mostly ignored all of the newer Souls games and thoroughly nailed this remake of Demon’s Souls. Showing that From Software has to finally pull its socks up and make something new for a change. Having played and finished every Armored Core game to date, thrashed the various Another Century’s Episode games and rinsed the likes of Metal Wolf Chaos.

In combat, this massive blade feels like an unusual mix of slashing, thrusting, and polearm weapons, so you should make sure to familiarize yourself with its diverse attacks before running headlong into a horde of demons.
One of the new weapons, the Reaper Scythe, was available as a pre-order bonus. Fans remember this weapon as being wielded by the Reaper in the Shrine of Storms. So far, no new story elements have been added, but with a broken Archstone still in the game, there is a possibility of DLC.
